Building close to grade presents unique challenges that require experienced construction techniques. Adequate ventilation beneath the deck surface prevents moisture accumulation that causes rot and mold. We maintain minimum 6-inch clearance from ground to framing, install vapor barriers where appropriate, and ensure positive drainage away from the structure. For very low installations, we use ground-contact-rated framing materials and specify composite or PVC decking that tolerates proximity to soil.
Ground-level decks offer design flexibility that elevated structures cannot match. Freestanding platforms require no ledger board attachment to your home, simplifying permitting and eliminating potential water intrusion issues.
